If you find yourself in an unhealthy relationship but are hesitant to take the action necessary to bring about positive change, you need to take a step back and thoughtfully examine the reasons for your hesitation to make the changes you know are necessary. By not taking proactive and positive action to introduce constructive change in an unhealthy relationship you are not doing yourself or your partner any favors. On the contrary, your inaction will solidify the negative behavior the led to the unhealthy relationship in the first place.

Your reluctance to initiate an open dialog of communication with your mate and delve into the reasons for your unhealthy relationship will not make your troubles disappear. In fact, it will amplify the issues and make them even worse. You need to face your problems “head on” and make an honest effort to change. These changes may need to start within you, so swallow your pride and set an example that your mate can respect and emulate.

You may find that your mate refuses to acknowledge that a problem exists much less admit to living in an unhealthy relationship. But the bottom line is really quite simple, if YOU believe that  you’re living in an unhealthy relationship, then YOU ARE!

If your best efforts to repair the unhealthy relationship end in failure, the strength of character you gain from taking the lead in an attempt to turn things around are well worth the effort. If on the other hand you choose to ignore the issues that you know are slowly heating to a boil, you may find yourself at the mercy of a variety of problems.

Effects of an Unhealthy Relationship

* Personal Conflicts – When you finally admit that you’re living in an unhealthy relationship but are reluctant to do anything about it, a strong possibility exists that you will be consumed by grief, guilt, and self doubt. Your partner may refuse to admit the problems resulting in a downward spiral into unhappiness and despair.

* Depression – Existing in an unhealthy relationship can bring about feelings of depression and desperation. You may find yourself feeling trapped by circumstance with no hope of escape. Living under these circumstances can cause your relationship problems to multiply while also having a negative effect in other areas of your life.

* Minor Issues Escalate into Problems – Minor issues that remain unresolved tend to develop into major problems that threaten the health of the relationship. When issues are identified they need to be resolved immediately before they have a chance to grow and multiply.

* Failure of the relationship – If an unhealthy relationship is allowed to remain unresolved the ultimate result will likely be a breakup that cannot be reconciled. If the relationship does somehow manage to survive in the short term it will become so fragile and unhealthy that the odds of survival long term are highly unlikely.

One of the most viable solutions to use in combating an unhealthy relationship is to open the lines of communication in a mature and responsible manner. Discuss your relationship problems with your partner while remaining calm, rational, and open to suggestions for resolving your issues in a manner that benefits both parties. Keep your mind open to the possibility that some of the relationship problems may be of your own making and therefore it will be up to you to share in the responsibilities of change.

If you’re fortunate you may end up finding a cure for your unhealthy relationship while at the same time benefiting from the growth that comes from positive personal change. This equals a win-win solution in anyone’s book!
